Message From The Congress Organising Committee Chairman

The call for papers marks a key stage in the journey towards the 15th World Congress of Food Science and Technology that is to be held in the Cape Town International Convention Centre, South Africa from August 22-26 2010.

This is the most prestigious event on the international food science & technology calendar and represents a wonderful opportunity for food professionals to meet and network at a superb venue in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

No matter how attractive the venue or how efficient the organisation of the event may be, the primary success factor for any scientific meeting will always be a top quality program that attracts the leading figures and topics from within the disciplines concerned. This can only be achieved by means of the submission of a wide range of interesting and relevant papers and posters.

I appeal to food scientists and technologists from throughout the world and from both academic and commercial spheres to do this and thus ensure that the Congress becomes a memorable and successful event. Our theme of "Food Science Solutions in an Evolving World" is intended to challenge, inform and stimulate debate among the Congress participants. Help us in this endeavour by submitting your papers and posters and joining us in Cape Town in August 2010.

Yours sincerely

Nigel Sunley
Organising Committee Chairman - IUFoST 2010

Message From The Scientific Programme Committee Chairman

The theme for the 15th IUFoST World Congress of Food Science and Technology, "Food Science Solutions in an Evolving World" was chosen to highlight the important role food scientists will play in terms of food security, food safety and environmental sustainability as the global community unites to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals.

IUFoST represents the global food science and technology fraternity, by nature a diverse discipline. The World Congress is the biennial gathering of the world's food scientists and major food industry players. The meeting will highlight the latest knowledge and developments in various food science sectors and encourage debate and formulation of scientific solutions to global food issues. It is only through sharing that science-based solutions can be jointly facilitated.

The scientific programme will provide a balance between original research in specific food sectors, commercial applications of scientific research and topics/issues with generic appeal (i.e. global industry and consumer trends, advances in food safety and analytical methods, environmental sustainability and food science education). In other words, there will be something for everyone in the world of food - scientists, technologists, regulators, entrepreneurs, marketing & business managers, educators, academics and students.

Thus, I would like to encourage you to become a part of this auspicious gathering by either submitting an abstract or simply by attending and joining in the knowledge sharing. I look forward to welcoming you in Cape Town to share the food science experience of your life!

Call for Papers / Abstract Submission

Abstract Submission Instructions and Guidelines

Abstracts of original research (for presentation as Oral Papers and Posters) or covering topics of commercial appeal are invited, to be presented at the 15th IUFoST World Congress of Food Science and Technology. Submitted papers should be original, topical, current and preferably address Global issues in one of the topics outlined above.

Original Research papers are defined as those that cover specific, new and original research and that have not been previously accepted for publication in a journal, presented in another conference or be under review at another conference.

Commercial Appeal papers can be defined as papers not covering original research, but rather focussing on either new applications of scientific research, review type papers, market research, consumer trends, regulatory guidelines or papers with a generic appeal to food industries, academia or consumers, but still based on sound science. These papers are not intended for advertising specific products, companies or services.

Participants wishing to contribute to the Scientific Program of the Congress are kindly requested to submit their abstracts before the deadline date of 31 January 2010.

All abstracts MUST be submitted online. Please click here for the Abstract Submission Process and follow the online submission procedures. Abstracts submitted by e-mail, mail or fax cannot be accepted.

The Scientific Committee will endeavour to schedule abstracts according to authors' preferences but reserves the right to decide on the final form of presentation.

Presenting Authors must register for the Congress by 15 June 2010. Failure to register by this date will automatically imply that the abstract will neither be included in the Congress sessions nor be printed in the Abstract section of the Final Programme Book.

ORAL and POSTER PAPERS

To submit a proposal to give a paper/poster:

  1. Prepare an abstract of your presentation of not more than 300 words excluding the title, authors and addresses, in a Microsoft Word file format (Word 97 or later). The abstract should provide a summary of the content of your proposed paper - please refer to the example provided below. A template to be used for uploading your abstract will be provided, when registering using the Abstract Submissions Process
  2. Submit your abstract/s online using the Abstract Submissions Process and register for on-line submission, then follow the instructions. You will be provided with a login and password, and may then log on to submit your abstract using the template provided. You may return to the submission system to amend your submission until the submission deadline. The abstract template and instructions for the on-line submission system will be e-mailed to you upon registering for on-line submissions.
  3. Indicate whether your abstract is being submitted as an original research abstract for ORAL or POSTER presentation or as a Commercial Appeal abstract.
  4. Choose the name of the topic in the dropdown list which best describes the congress topic in which your submission is most appropriate. It is anticipated that the number of submissions for ORAL presentation will exceed the number of presentation slots available. Authors submitting original research abstracts for ORAL presentation will be required to indicate on the on-line submission system, whether they are willing to present a poster, should their submission not be accepted for ORAL presentation. Commercial Appeal abstracts will only be considered for oral presentation!
  5. If your presentation has been invited into a specific symposium or plenary session, please first tick the "Yes" box in the relevant section and then select the symposium/session name from the dropdown list.
  6. Presenters of oral papers must use Microsoft PowerPoint (97 or later) for their presentation. No other form or projection will be available.
Submissions for oral and poster presentations will only be accepted in the above format and by the due date of 31 January 2010.

Acceptance / Rejection of Presentation

The Scientific Committee will review all submitted abstracts and reserves the right to accept or reject any abstract. Selected abstracts will be presented as Oral or Poster presentations.
